Online gambling in the US is regulated primarily at the state level, following a 2018 Supreme Court decision that allowed each state to set its own rules. As a result, laws differ widely across the country, so online gambling in California will look different from that in New Jersey, for example. Some states have fully legalized online casinos, some allow limited forms of online betting, and others prohibit it. The Maine Joint Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs advanced bill LD 2007 which would classify sweepstakes casinos as ‘unlawful gambling’. This comes as part of a broader, national crackdown on sweepstakes casinos with similar bills introduced in Indiana, Virginia, and Mississippi. The move to prohibit sweepstakes casinos comes just over a month after Governor Janet Mills reversed her opposition to online casinos in Maine. Bill LD 1164, granting exclusive online casino rights to Maine’s four tribes, will become law later this year.
